Digger Dog Hole

The area Grid Ref : SD 70270 73512
Alt : 199 m
Length : ~3m
Location : situated close to the wall, on a small (quarried) cliff edge, a short distance from the road.
After it's location was noted in Feb 2003 by Adam it was briefly dug to reveal steeply dipping passage but as it was full of sand it was left whilst other things took place. Ged expressed interest in the hole in 2004 and the usual 'Storrs Digging Team' made plans for digging it..
Dunc and the Eggs 31/03/04- Ged had made good progress clearing muck from the hole and by the time Dunc arrived it was looking good. We both started clearing the interesting looking rift and collapsing the roof (it was loose, like Geds slab which peeled away from the wall when Ged stood on it!), fairly soon we found a white object staring at us.. This turned out to be a pot egg, further digging into the rift then produced a further three eggs!! These eggs are now stored in an egg box and have been kept, owing to their interesting historical significance, whilst not worth anything and probably meaningless to most folk it's a reminder of an age long since passed.
Ged in Digger Dog 08/04/04- We cleared last weeks debris including Geds slab, then Ged set about digging the rift whilst Dunc set about on the hole itself. The hole soon revealed airspace so attention was paid to this and much progress was made (see picture of Ged in the hole).
10/04/04- Further work was undertaken by Ged and Dunc, moving a large rock to create a step and pushing the cave a little further.. We still have airspace above the downwards trending cave..
20/04/04- Ged and Dunc pushed the cave further, due to our success we now need more bodies to assist in further work at this hole!
Dunc in Digger Dog 24/10/04- After the recent heavy rain Ged and Adam found the hole full of water, digging at a nearby hole and draining the water lowered Digger Dogs water level thus proving a connection between the two holes..

Next digging session - as it fills with water and doesn't drain and is connected to a nearby hole the dig was left to its own devices! Maybe the rift may repay attention at some point in the future..
